About Us !

What is Artists in Medicine?

Artists in Medicine is a student organization at UTD founded by Heidi Genova Costeño on Month Day Year. The organization explores the intersection between art and healthcare, creating opportunities for students to express themselves, build skills in empathy, observation, and communication, and promotes wellness and self reflection. Artists in Medicine encourages students to engage more actively with healthcare studies, awareness and acceptance campaigns, and learning new topics through the use of art in all forms. Why? Attention to detail in art, crafts, and projects—as an individual dedicates their time into every movement—expands their eyes and reduces errors in observation. Patient care, needs, and behaviours are heavily dependent on observational skills that our organization wants to foster. Discussion and creation of art encourages new perspectives and creates a deeper emotional understanding which aids in patient care. Art also promotes self-reflection and reduces burnout for pre-health individuals who have a long journey ahead of them. In the community art can be a powerful tool our organization wishes to utilize for advocacy of a variety of medical topics, from cancer to autism, a vital tool in informing our community. Lastly, we recognize the struggle to balance hobbies and schoolwork, this organization allows us to continue pursuing what makes us happy and stay connected to our authentic selves. Artists in Medicine explores the many ways in which art and creativity can aid, heal, connect, and open our minds to a deeper level of understanding with ourselves, our patients, and each other.

Meet the Officers

Heidi Genova Costeño - Founder and President

Hi! I'm Heidi, the founder and president of Artists in Medicine. A little about me: I'm an aspiring CAP, love crows, play guitar and sax, love to draw and write poetry, and my fun fact is I can read tarot cards! I founded this club to bridge my love for art with my love for healthcare, sharing the connections we make from it to other creative individuals at UTD. My vision is to create a space where individuals can connect through our shared interests, learn about medical topics, reduce burnout, and be empowered to advocate through their voices and their art. My personal goal in life is to end the negative stigmas surrounding mental health, especially due to cultural barriers, and to provide affordable and available access to healthcare for all. As someone who was less fortunate at times and lost a cousin to suicide, I love giving back with kindness and understand the need for awareness in not just healthcare itself, but access to it. I hope through my art I can make an impact on the community, bringing more awareness to mental health and issues in the healthcare system. I'm so excited to lead this wonderful group of individuals to paint the world with their colourful minds!

Vivi To - Vice President

Hello! I am Vivi and I'm the vice president of Artists in Medicine! I'm majoring in public health here at UTD and I'm an aspiring to be a PA in the future. Outside of my studies, I love discovering new music, working out, tying new foods, and meeting new people, so feel free to come up to me -- I'd love to be friends! My goal in this club is to prevent burnout and the loneliness epidemic among college students -- specifically pre-health majors -- through fine arts and community. I believe that by helping others, we help ourselves as well.

    Medical Muse Project !

This is a simple breakdown of what the project is

    a semester long project
    creative medium of your choice
bridge your creativity with advocacy for mental, medical, or general health
    win a prize!

    The Prompt

Create a comic/webcomic, a musical piece, a lyrical song, a poem, a short story, a short film or animation, or an illustration relating to a topic in medicine, whether it be awareness to certain diseases, acceptance of mental disorders, a representation of mental health, issues in the healthcare system, or the impact of a disease/condition, etc. Your piece must be engaging, unique, and show effort in its making. Alongside your piece you may write an optional short paragraph/essay on what your piece is about, its significance, and the impact. This is an ongoing project you may work on outside of club hours for an end of semester competition for a prize, an opt-out of a requirement next semester, and public recognition on our socials.

    Questions and Answers

    What mediums can I use?

You can use anything you like! You can write a song with lyrics, do a parody cover, or just make an instrumental and write a paper on its meaning. You can create an animation as simple or complex as you like, a video essay, or film a small movie as short or as long as you want. You can create a collage or bullet journal spread. You can write poetry or a short story, an essay, even. You can create an illustration traditionally or digitally, make a comic, sculpt with clay, embroider or crochet! The path you choose is up to you, and don't be afraid to ask for help :)

    What can I talk about?

There is no specific expectation of what to create your piece for, but let it be something you care about, or something that calls to you. The idea of this project is to explore how you can advocate through your art--so be passionate! You can talk about mental health itself, or the issues surrounding it. You can talk about the healthcare system, specific professionals careers, diseases and disorders. You can talk about being mindful through certain practices, taking care of your body, etc. Health has a wide span--choose what you love.

How and when do I submit?

Your submissions can be done through email or uploading onto our google form for bigger projects :)
Submissions will have a specific date every semester, but for the fall, will generally be due right after/before fall break. In the spring it will generally be due about a week before the last day of classes.

What if my submission is 3D and needs different angles?

feel free to upload multiple images or even a video! There is no cap on amount of parts of your piece you can send.

How do I know my submission processed?

AiM will send you an email to let you know we received your piece, and we will let you know if we have any issues viewing it!

What exactly is the prize and how many can win?

The prize will vary per semester, but it will be made known to members by or right after the first meeting! The prize will be something tangible, and around $30 worth. Alongside this members can choose to opt out of one requirements --semester fee, fundraising credit, volunteer credit, meeting req, etc. You'll also be featured on our website homepage and our social media posts!
TWO people can win the Medical Muse Project.
However, AiM recognizes the invaluable effort its members put into this project, and will award those who did not win House Points and honourable mentions in our socials.

    Why should I participate?

AiM is dedicated to helping students find their voice and ignite a passion for the arts while advocating and contributing to health. The Medical Muse Project is a great chance to showcase your artistic skills, what new things you've learned, and advocate for an issue or topic you're passionate about! This project will help you learn to be dedicated, patient, detail-oriented, and more confident in your abilities to create change in the world. It's also just something fun!

    This project seems too big!

This isn't a question...but AiM will send you email reminders if you have interest in submitting the project for you procrastinators ;), plus, if you truly cannot finish it, keep working on it and submit it for next semester!
